Heritage

The Scout movement started its journey not with a single step but with a single camp.  That camp, organised by Baden-Powell in 1907 was followed, on 24th January 1908, with the first instalment of Robert Baden-Powell’s ‘Scouting for Boys’.

Immediately following its publication Troops were formed across the country and although it is impossible to say with certainty which was the first there were ninety-one Troops functioning in 1908.

Locally, some of our earliest troops were associated with the Hartley Wintney Association.  The earliest reference we can find is from the Hampshire Chronicle for Saturday 7th August 1909 when the Rev J.P. Baynes expressed an ambition to establish either a Church Lads’ Brigade or a company of Boy Scouts in Odiham.

Most of the Groups that registered on 11th March 1910 in the new Odiham District still exist as the 1st through to the 9th and now form the Bramshill District Scouts.  Over all that time we only lost the 2nd (Odiham Town) to the Odiham District!
